" planting party, " where community
members aided in planting. This
spring, this prairie will grow until
the plants get about three feet high.
We'll use the high-mow method
(used to prevent weeds from going
to seed) and spot spraying, and will
continue that practice until the prairie
is established enough to burn.
Eventually, the soil ecosystem will
adjust itself to be more favorable to
the indigenous plants and the weeds
will not be able to survive.
With the more established prairies,
we aim to do a prescribed burn
every three to five years. Periodically
burning the prairies helps bring nutrients
back into the soil. The burning
also rids the area of undesirable
plants and facilitates new growth for
native plants. Our trained staff partners
with a local college to execute
these burns so they can use this as
an educational training opportunity.
Community Education
This past summer, Tom Twedell,
who initiated the urban prairie project,
hosted our first immersive educational
experience for kids in our
community. They learned to spot
the difference between weeds and
plants; the biological services of native
plants, such as how Indigenous
communities use them; how the
plants help with soil health; and how
insects and animals benefit from
them. The students explored the towering
stocks of Echinacea, Solidago,
Agastache, Rudbeckia and yarrow
(just to name a few), drawing, taking
notes and experiencing the prairie
with all their senses.
Twedell, also being a science
schoolteacher, hopes to use prairies
as outdoor classrooms. " With
some being close to schools, everyone
can benefit from being outside
and learning in a different environPARK

ment, " he says. He will be hosting
more educational workshops as the
prairies mature.
Installing prairies has provided
ways for people to harvest plants,
take pictures and find a peaceful
place to relax. We encourage others
in the park and recreation field
to explore the opportunities prairies
have provided to us.
