designed places that provide services/programs to multiple
generations concurrently and foster meaningful
cross-age relationships. " Recreation and community
centers often provide multigenerational programs in a
shared space and are primed to take the next step to
become intergenerational shared sites.
There are many considerations when creating these
shared sites and shifting the approach within a community
setting to be more intentionally intergenerational.
Intergenerational shared sites allow for planned activities
and informal interactions to occur on a regular basis
with a primary focus on relationship-building. Staff
understand the strengths and needs of all age groups
and value cross-age connections.
Researchers studying intergenerational strategies
have established effective practices and learned from
challenges in other intergenerational shared spaces.
Best practices in intergenerational programs align with
park and recreation practices. The Sharing Our Space
Toolkit provides guidelines for those seeking to create
intentional intergenerational shared spaces:
Planning: Suggestions and tools are provided to form
a planning committee, conduct community assessments,
and make key decisions on topics like choosing
a target population, program model and partners.
Designing: This section provides design principles for
intergenerational spaces. The physical environment has
an impact on the quantity and quality of intergenerational
relationships. Community centers may serve different
ages in the same space. However, intentionality
is required to design indoor and outdoor spaces that
lead to meaningful intergenerational engagement.
Funding: Sites that are brand new, as well as those that
are seeking to expand existing services, will need to consider
funding opportunities. This section provides keys
to funding success, such as relationship building, revenue
diversification, creative thinking and persistence, as
well as suggestions for sources of funding.
Marketing: This section discusses initial marketing
steps, target audience, messaging, and implementing
and assessing your marketing plan. It also includes a
marketing plan template.
Staffing: Recreation and community center staff may
find their staffing model described among the four models
in this section or may consider shifting staffing to create
an intergenerational shared site. One model includes
hiring an intergenerational coordinator to oversee intergenerational
activities. This section also details staff training
and best practices in intergenerational programming.
Building Intergenerational Relationships: In this
section, strategies for planning intentional intergenerational
activities and fostering informal interaction are
described. Park and recreation professionals will see how
many activities provided in their centers can be intentionally
intergenerational. The more frequent and regular the
interactions between generations occur, the more likely
people are to build meaningful relationships. Suggestions
for the duration of activity (20 to 30 minutes for younger
children) and number of participants and ratio (it is best
to have a 1:1 ratio of youth to older adults) are provided.
Evaluating: This section guides users through the
systematic steps to determine if the objectives established
in the planning section were met.
Sustaining: Recreation professionals can consider longevity
and long-term goals when developing their intergenerational
sites and programs by exploring strategies
for developing a sustainability plan at the onset.
