RESEARCH
NRPA Park Pulse Interactive Dashboards

eleasing research findings at NRPA often stimulates many
interesting follow-up questions from professionals that reach
beyond our published results. As researchers, we love and
appreciate the thoughtfulness and curiosity of park and
recreation professionals because it helps our Research team to better
understand the data that are most useful to those in the field.
Fortunately for those with curious
minds, NRPA provides interactive
dashboards that accompany
our Park Pulse Surveys (nrpa.org/
ParkPulse) that delve into the nuances
of these research findings. These
include additional breakdowns by
variables like gender, race, region,
household income and more. The
groupings are useful for identifying
potential gaps and for making the
case for programs and initiatives
that are designed and developed to
benefit community members from
specified demographic groups or of
other characteristics.
This article highlights samples
of Park Pulse survey results during
approximately the past year for
which professionals can explore
findings by survey respondent characteristics.
Each includes example
follow-up information pulled by
using the interactive, which can be
accessed by scrolling down on the
corresponding linked webpage.
Support for Monitoring Systems
(tinyurl.com/4p7y9uay): Almost
all U.S. adults (93 percent) support
their local park and recreation agency
collecting data from monitoring
systems like cameras, counters and/
or visitors' cellphones. Using the
interactive reveals that people in
the Midwest region (67 percent) are
more likely than those from other
regions to support the use of monitoring
systems for crime prevention
and mitigation.
Employee Benefits That Benefit
All (tinyurl.com/mt5axhba): Nearly
all U.S. adults (94 percent) have a
fringe benefit they would like their
employer to offer. Exploring the fringe
benefits by gender reveals that males
(46 percent) and females (37 percent)
differ most in their desire for investment
opportunities as fringe benefits.
Parks and Recreation
Centers
Community Representation (tiny
url.com/yafejkat): Most U.S. adults
(80 percent) agree it is at least somewhat
important that local government
officials reflect the racial and/
or ethnic makeup of the community
they serve. Grouping by generation
reveals that the importance of racial/
ethnic makeup of officials is higher
for younger (i.e., Gen Z) than for older
(i.e., baby boomers) generations.
Fostering Friendships Through
Activity (tinyurl.com/
Group
kd5zkd9t): Many U.S. adults (74
percent) strongly believe it is important
for youth to participate in
group activities. Exploring groups
using the dashboard shows that
these beliefs appear to strengthen
with increasing household income.
Parks and Recreation: Always
a Great Option in Winter
(tinyurl.com/ycynzxxj): Most U.S.
adults (84 percent) have activities they
enjoy that promote health during

winter, including hiking, gym workouts,
running/walking outdoors, indoor
fitness classes and indoor sports.
U.S. males (22 percent) are more likely
than U.S. females (13 percent) to
participate in indoor sports in winter.
Nature-Based Solutions to Climate
Change (tinyurl.com/52rk
k64h): Most U.S. adults (84 percent)
support their local park and recreation
agency in making nature-based
investments to support their community's
environment and reduce the
impact of natural disasters. Grouping
by age ranges indicates support
for investments in all of the suggested
related activities by park and
recreation agencies is strongest from
those ages 65 and older.
Exploring data by these groupings
adds a depth of understanding
that can be valuable for beneficially
using the findings. These interactive
dashboards are designed to offer a
quick method for obtaining overall
and grouped data on a variety of
park and recreation-related topics.
Professionals are encouraged to
check back regularly to explore our
monthly Park Pulse releases.
Throughout 2025, the NRPA Research
and Evaluation team members will be reviewing
our data and impact offerings for
understandability,
usefulness, presentation
and more. We encourage you to send
any feedback or suggestions about our
Park Pulse interactive dashboards or any
of our other data-related resources to the
author. We also welcome suggestions for
questions for the public as considerations
for future Park Pulse polls.
